Windows 10 Myth #2 – Forced Updates

WINDOWS 10 MYTH #2: Updates for Windows 10 will automatically install without your approval.

Windows 10 Myth #2 is a bit true.  This rumor got stared by Microsoft itself from their EULA licensing agreement for Windows 10 which states "The software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you... By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice."

For computers that have Windows 10 Home edition installed on them, Microsoft sends the update and your system installs them without your input, which is the true part.  But there is a workaround if you connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi (it won't work if you connect to the Internet using a cable) which is to change your connection to Metered.  To make this change, select Settings / Network & Internet / Advanced Options.  Make sure you turn your "Metered connection" to ON.  This change allows you to decide when to install an update that Windows Update with notify you about.  Simply select the Download button beneath the available update.

If you have Windows 10 Pro edition. you can put off installing updates, except for security updates, for a few months.  By the time the system actually installs them, any updates that had problems associated with will have been fixed and you will hopefully avoid those same problems.

To defer all updates in Windows 10 Pro by several months, except security updates which are installed immediately, simply select Settings / Update & Security / Windows Update / Advanced Options.  Check the box next to "Defer upgrades" on the screen under the "Choose how updates are installed" heading.

By the way, for businesses running Windows 10 Enterprise edition, the auto-updates don't apply to you.
